COVID-19 - Message from the Head of School

Berkeley Hall School's Nursery through Grade 8 students are learning in person, on campus.
Respect, responsibility, honesty, and compassion are at the core of the BHS community and together with our mission, guide the decisions made to support the well-being of our families and employees. While planning for our 2021-22 school and community re-opening, we are grateful for each one of you and the strength and sense of family we have within our BHS community.

Keeping all members of our community safe is paramount. Under this year’s COVID protocols, we will continue to gather in new and different ways, while continuing to build a culture of care that moves beyond explicit safety protocols and amplifies our care for each other and our campus. Each member of the community has a specific role to play, as a good steward not only of his/her own health, but in support of the health and wellness of other community members.

To that end, we will begin the year with the following protocols:

  • Only students, faculty, and staff are invited on campus. This means for the initial weeks of school, while we’re all settling in from our respective travels and activities and watching to see how the country is impacted by schools opening, we will limit the people on campus to those who must be here for daily operations.
  • Masks will be worn indoors and outdoors when around others.
  • In-person community events will be put on hold for the moment as we monitor the current climate. As you know, we cherish our in-person events, and we look forward to safely coming together soon with confidence under current guidelines.
  • Weekly testing is required for all K-8 students and employees, regardless of vaccination status. BHS will provide weekly testing on campus each Tuesday morning.
  • We will adhere to quarantine requirements per LACDPH guidelines.
  • Vaccinations are required for all employees.
  • Vaccinations are required for all students 12 and older. Medical and religious exemptions are available.

Our detailed school policies and procedures can be found in the 2021-2022 Addendum to the Parent-Student Handbook with specific COVID-19 safety protocols we expect to follow as pandemic-related conditions evolve this year.

We are prioritizing in-person learning as allowed and recommended by the California Department of Public Health and the Los Angeles County Department of Health. To enable these efforts, we will utilize our extensive outdoor resources for learning, and of course, leverage our proven commitment to a high quality education for our students.

As we make progress toward a healthier time, we continue to be grateful for our community’s resilience and adaptability. Our nimble approach, consistent effort, and hard work will continue to deliver excellence in education. We will also learn, listen, innovate, collaborate, and grow – together. Thank you for partnering with us in this important work.
