Our Primary Department, for students in grades K – 3, provides a strong, supportive foundation for learning and allows for individualized instruction. We offer a dynamic and engaging curriculum designed to inspire each child’s innate curiosity, and that integrates reading and writing with social studies, math, science, art, music and drama.
Expository, opinion, and narrative writing are heavily integrated into all the core subjects beginning in first grade. In addition, quality literature forms the basis for many interdisciplinary projects: a social studies topic may become the basis for a 3-dimensional art project, a drama production, a music lesson, or a nonfiction reading unit of study.
Our reading workshop approach motivates students to think analytically as well as creatively. And our math program takes a hands-on experiential approach, which emphasizes problem solving and critical reasoning in preparation for higher-order mathematics and junior high algebra.
In addition to their two core teachers, Primary School students at Berkeley Hall have seven specialist teachers in science, art, music, drama, physical education, woodshop/robotics, and library sciences. A full-time literacy teacher provides primary-level students with additional support and opportunities for enrichment.
