Donnelly Burg Family Quote

The BHS Annual Giving Campaign is the primary way for you to support the yearly operational priorities of the school. By giving, you help Berkeley Hall to strengthen and improve the educational experience of every student and the BHS community overall.

Annual Giving FAQ

List of 16 frequently asked questions.

  • Does it matter when I make my donation?

Yes! A donation or pledge made early in the school year is a great advantage to Berkeley Hall because it enables us to know how much money will be available to support the budget. Quite simply, contributions early in the school year enables us to know which programs can be added, enhanced, or supplemented throughout the school year. Given the importance of this, we ask donors to make pledges by December 31, but donations may be paid through June 30 – a “commit now, and okay to pay later” option.

Once you have made your annual donation or pledge, you will not receive another BHS Annual Giving Campaign solicitation until the next academic year.
  • Why should I participate in the BHS Annual Giving Campaign?

Berkeley Hall School’s budget is funded by tuition revenue, earnings from our modest endowment, and by annual financial donations from parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends. In fact, tuition revenue itself accounts for approximately 85% of Berkeley Hall’s annual budget.

We are not alone or unusual in that regard! Indeed, according to the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), virtually all private, independent schools across the country depend significantly on the financial support of annual giving by donors – over and above tuition revenue – to achieve their mission and sustain their operations.

To be sure, it is the generosity of Berkeley Hall’s benefactors, families like yours, that provides the additional support for all that Berkeley Hall does – beyond what is possible with tuition revenue alone. Exceptional teachers, an enriching and inspiring campus, a wide array of athletic programs and team sports, unbounded experiential learning opportunities, an award-winning arts curricula, and so much else – are all made possible by your financial support. In short, your financial contributions to the BHS Fund are put to immediate use for the benefit of all students for academic programs, student scholarships and financial aid, technology and equipment, faculty development, campus enrichment, and so much more… and helps to maintain Berkeley Hall’s outstanding learning environment.
  • Why should I give if my family is already paying tuition and fees?

Contributions to Berkeley Hall make the economic model of exceptional faculty, small class sizes, personalized curricula and instruction, and low faculty-to-student ratios possible. Your donation provides educational resources that provide the best learning environment possible for every student.
  • How can I donate to the BHS Annual Giving Campaign?

Payment methods include:  Personal check, cash, securities, and credit card (MasterCard, Visa, Discover, and American Express).

Donations may be made by mail, in person, or online.
  • Why is the BHS Annual Giving Campaign so important to Berkeley Hall?

The BHS Annual Giving Campaign bridges the “gap” between tuition and what it actually costs to educate our students. The estimated gap per student this fiscal year is approximately $2,800. The BHS Annual Giving Campaign helps to cover the school’s daily operating expenses and to strengthen its academic program and student experiences. This is the greatest philanthropic need at the school and, hence, should be a BHS parent’s first philanthropic priority.
  • Are donations to the BHS Annual Giving Campaign tax-deductible?

Donations to the BHS Annual Giving Campaign are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.
  • How much should I / we give to the BHS Annual Giving Campaign?

We hope that you will make Berkeley Hall one of your top philanthropic priorities. The exact amount of each family’s contribution will depend upon their unique circumstances.

Think about it this way: Each year, Berkeley Hall receives annual donations that range from $10 to more than $25,000. While large leadership gifts are crucial to Berkeley Hall’s financial stability, gifts of every size truly add up and have a significant impact.

Current families, faculty, and staff are asked to support the BHS Fund to the best of their ability. As a guideline, and as we’ve mentioned, the “gap” between the actual cost of what it takes to provide a Berkeley Hall education per student and the average amount of revenue generated per student at Berkeley Hall is approximately $2,800 for the 2016-17 school year. Another guideline is that the BHS Development Advisory Committee suggests families consider a donation equivalent to approximately 10% of their total tuition amount. Some families are able to give much more than this, while others can afford a much smaller gift.
  • May I designate how my donation will be used?

Contributors to the BHS Annual Giving Campaign have the option of designating their donation to a specific area in our “family of funds.”  Designation options for this 2016-17 fiscal year include:
    • Academic program enrichment
    • Faculty development
    • Campus renewal
    • Student scholarships and financial aid
    • To area of greatest need
All designation options augment the school’s operations budget and enable Berkeley Hall to use the donation in the year it is received.
  • Does Berkeley Hall apply for grants?

Yes. And virtually all foundations will ask for data regarding the level of participation of our families, faculty, and staff to the BHS Annual Giving Campaign. Families, faculty, and staff of an independent school are the most important benefactors of annual giving. Therefore, Berkeley Hall needs 100% participation of everyone to enable the school to present a strong case for grants from foundations. That is why we ask everyone to make a financial donation in support of Berkeley Hall School.
  • Can I pledge a donation to be paid over time?

Yes. Berkeley Hall welcomes your donation through a pledge – a formal statement of intention to make a donation to the school. With a pledge, you may complete your donation by making regular payments over time (e.g., monthly), enabling you to give more generously than you may originally have considered. In addition, please note that each payment on your pledge is eligible for an income-tax charitable deduction.
  • What are the various “circles” for the levels of donations provided?

The BHS Annual Giving Campaign features and recognizes the following six levels – or circles – of donor support:
    • Founders’ Circle:                     $20,000 or more
    • Head of School Circle:             $10,000 - $19,999
    • Champions’ Circle:                  $5,000  -  $9,999
    • Partners’ Circle:                      $2,500  -  $4,999
    • Advocates’ Circle:                   $1,000  -  $2,499
    • Friends’ Circle:                        Up to $999

Donations at each of these levels of support will be highlighted and reported in the annual Berkeley Hall Report of Giving. In addition, donors at the Partners’ Circle level and above are invited to the annual Head of School Donor Reception to acknowledge, honor, and celebrate their generosity.

  • Why doesn’t Berkeley Hall charge the full cost instead of raising additional funds each year?

Like most independent and private schools, Berkeley Hall uses a financial model that relies upon tuition revenue plus charitable contributions annually to fund its ongoing operations. This model helps to moderate tuition levels and to ensure that a Berkeley Hall education is accessible to as many families as possible while, at the same time, allowing contributors to help fund school operations on a tax-deductible basis.
  • My family is on financial aid, so how can we make a difference?

Every donation makes a difference, regardless of size. We are a small independent school that depends upon private, philanthropic support. In addition, Berkeley Hall needs 100% participation from everyone to enable the school to present a strong appeal for grants from foundations. For that reason, we encourage everyone, regardless of the amount, be it $10, $25, or $50, to make a financial commitment in support of Berkeley Hall students, teachers, and staff!
  • Why should I give when my child is graduating?

In any nursery – eighth grade school that is more than ten years old, parents of previous generations of students provided gifts to fund the resources your child enjoys today. We encourage you to continue the Berkeley Hall legacy of giving toward enhancements that build the school’s long-term reputation for empowering students to fulfill their unlimited God-given potential as fearless scholars and conscientious citizens. Such giving strengthens Berkeley Hall’s ability to excel over time in preparing children and young adults for success in high school, college, and beyond.

Just as important, the relationship your child has with Berkeley Hall School extends far beyond the time he or she is on campus as a student! A central part of our mission is to instill a lifelong love of learning, of growing, of expanding one’s mental, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual horizons. BHS students spend as many as ten years with us learning about and fulfilling their own inherent potential and capabilities, developing their thinking and reasoning skills, forming friendships and relationships that often last a lifetime, and preparing for the future.

In short, your child will always be a vital and valued member of the Berkeley Hall family. And an important part of family, even an extended one, is to help other members of that family experience similar blessings and benefits in the years to come. That is why we want our school to be ready for your children’s children!
  • Are matching gifts eligible for this campaign?

Yes! Gift matching is an excellent way to increase the value of your own charitable donation through your employer. Many employers match gifts dollar for dollar. Some companies even match gifts made by retirees and/or spouses. To find out if your gift is eligible, please contact the Berkeley Hall School Development Department at (310) 476-6421, x-217, or at ewagner@berkeleyhall.org.
