Staying Curious This Summer

Hello Scientists!

Junior High Science Teacher Mr. Brown, here. I hope you're all having a summer like we're having in our school garden – filled with growth and diversity. Whether you’re traveling to new or familiar places, enrolled in a fun camp, or just enjoying some time with your family and friends there are always opportunities to make scientific connections and discoveries.

For those down times when you’re looking for something to watch, check out some of these amazing documentaries and docuseries. If you’re interested in ecology and conservation, be sure to check out David Attenborough’s A Life on Our Planet, and Kiss the Ground.  If your love is the Ocean, I recommend My Octopus Teacher, the Blue Planet Series, Chasing Coral, and Seaspiracy. If your interests lie off-world, I highly recommend the Universe Series and the new Black Holes: The Edge of All We Know documentary. In addition to these resources, check out the TedX YouTube channel for a variety of interesting topics.

If you’re looking for some fun science apps to use on IOS or Android devices, check out some of these options:
  • The Seek app, by iNaturalist, is used to identify the plants and animals around you, no matter where you are. Simply use your camera and collect new species observations and complete challenges to earn citizen science badges.
  • Earth School has options for both Elementary and Middle School scientists and has games covering everything from the birth of the universe to the diversity of species.
  • Looking for ways to explore the origins, discoveries, and elements of the universe that are fun for all ages on any device? Try downloading and investigating the NASA and Periodic Table of Elements apps.
Have a great time exploring this summer, and I’ll see you in the Fall!

Sincerely,

Mr. Brown
