Balance Training for Throwing

Primary students started a balance training program. This helps improve their accuracy when throwing and doing other things like hitting a tennis ball or shooting a basketball. Our body uses three systems to help find its balance: somatosensory (muscles signals), vestibular (inner ear fluid system), and visual (eyes). Research has show that throwing accuracy improves when people can balance well with their eyes closed. Basically, if you can balance well without using a lot of sight/visual feedback, then you can use your vision more for focusing on a throwing target, a basketball hoop, or a tennis ball, which improves hand-eye coordination and accuracy.

Primary students practiced balancing on one leg with their eyes closed. To make it harder, they either touched their nose with alternating hands, or they did the currently fashionable "dabbing" sports dance. Most chose to do single leg, eyes closed "dabbing." Students will also work with balance boards.

If you want to see how much you rely on your vision for balance, try standing on one leg with your eyes focused on one object in front of you. Then, try doing the same thing with your eyes closed. Which one is harder?
