Where Ideas Take Shape

Your child will grow as a builder, thinker, and changemaker.

The Berkeley Hall Innovation Lab is a versatile makerspace for tinkering and transforming. It serves as a joyful launchpad for students in all grades to develop design and real-world problem solving skills.

Starting in Primary (Kindergarten through 3rd grade) and continuing through Middle School (6th to 8th grade), students explore science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math (STEAM) in hands-on, meaningful ways.

"We're growing motivated, persistent makers - kids who see something they don't know how to do and find a way to figure it out."

- Andy Steadman, Innovation Lab Director

What Happens in the Lab?

Each week, students in Elementary (grades 1 to 5) dive into ILab classes as part of their specialist rotation. They build, code, design, and discover:

In Middle School, students take their learning further through elective courses like robotics, photography, 3D architecture, and animation. At the end of each trimester, they present their work in the Electives Showcase, a student-led "trade show" in Hodges Theater.

Learning Through Doing

ILab projects are rooted in real-world inquiry. In Primary, Intermediate, and Middle School students are challenged to:

  • Design a home that can be 3D-printed to solve a housing challenge
  • Build a structure that adapts to a hilly landscape
  • Collaborate in a schoolwide House LEGO Derby, refining their designs and cheering each other on

It's interactive, messy learning that builds skills and helps students grow in confidence, creativity, and persistence.

Building Curious Scholars

The ILab reflects Berkeley Hall’s whole-child approach: kids are encouraged to wonder widely, follow their interests, and become drivers of their own learning. Whether they’re in Primary, Intermediate, or Middle School, crafting a digital animation or prototyping an invention, students learn to:

  • Solve problems with creativity
  • Communicate their thinking
  • See themselves as inventors, creators, and changemakers

Ready for What's Next

By the end of Middle School, your child will have a portfolio of meaningful work and the ability to speak confidently about their ideas and process. This kind of self-awareness and initiative helps our students stand out in high school admissions and beyond.
