Third Grade Map Project

The word map comes from the latin word "mappa" which means cloth or towel. To experience what it might have been like to create an early map, the third grade embarked on a project to create their own maps on a piece of canvas.
They learned about the elements of maps including the key, the scale, and the compass rose. They created their own imaginary islands, including special features such as mountains, buildings (sports venues), fields and streams, etc. They also wrote descriptions of adventures on their islands.
