Sunny Opposites: Straight vs Curvy Lines

Tracy Cheney
Second graders experienced the dissonance of creating a familiar symbol using opposites. In this exercise, they said goodbye to the summer sun at the fall equinox and started to greet the winter sun. This art lesson incorporated the different kinds of lines used in drawing, and the color theory warm vs cool colors. Students split the paper in half, and began creating the sun with the familiar curvy-family of lines and warm colors. Then...
finished the second half of the sun with the angle-family of lines and cool colors. That felt strange! It was interesting to see how these young children had already incorporated very strong symbolism into their visual vocabulary, and even by age seven it was a challenge to break free of it for some students. They had to concentrate hard to not fall back into already established drawing habits in order to finish this artwork of opposites. Quite a thought stretcher!
