2nd Grade Learns to Write Like Ezra Jack Keats!
The most exciting part of the day for 2nd graders? - when it's time for Writers' Workshop. “Can we please have more writing time?” “I can’t wait to share my story!” Each day for an hour, students transform themselves into authors and write, write, WRITE! They've been working on writing personal narratives in which they recount “small moments" from their lives. They're learning how to include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use transition words to show order, and provide a sense of closure in each story they write.
To help improve their writing along the way, students used one of their favorite authors, Ezra Jack Keats, to be their mentor writer. From Keats, they learned how to write like real authors by adding similes, emotional endings, ellipses, colorful words, repeating words, and sound words to their own “small moment” stories. They will soon celebrate their writing by publishing their favorite piece from the unit and see it showcased on our writing bulletin board in the classroom. They would love for you to stop by and check out their final products!
