Students Design Fº-Cº Conversion App

Kelly Neale
A group of advanced 8th grade students were selected to work on a special project to present at last week's Open House. The mission: Their "tech start-up" was hired to create a temperature conversion app for mobile devices. The app needed to convert Fahrenheit temperatures to Celsius temperatures and vice versa. Nine students worked in teams of three to derive and set up the formula in Excel (using their knowledge of and experience with linear equations), write the back-end code to support the conversion program, create the drop-down menus for end users, and design the front-end design of the application. Each team presented their finished application to the rest of class before Open House and then again during Open House to the many parents who passed through the junior high math room.
