Flipping the Classroom with Khan Academy

The 6th grade students are eating it up – Khan Academy, the web-based math program featured on 60 Minutes last month. "I like that there are a wide range of skills to learn, from 1-digit addition to calculus," said one sixth grader, while another appreciated being able to watch videos on "stuff that is hard or difficult to understand, like scientific notation and order of operations with absolute values." This is all possible when the classroom is "flipped" – when students learn the concepts in self-guided study (traditionally, outside of class) and then engage in more collaborative classroom activities once students have individually grasped a concept. The individualized path to learning is enhanced, collaborative efforts and skills get a boost, and deeper understanding is the result.

The students enjoy the "Energy Point" system and "Mastery Challenges" that reward and show off their new skills! One of the best features for teachers and parents? The program includes live assessment that instantly relates important information, such as which students are struggling and with which concept they need further assistance.

Whether it is re-teaching material previously learned in class or new material never seen before, the students have ownership of which math concept they learn and practice.
