4th Grade Mission Posters

Tracy Cheney
One of the typical school assignments routinely given to students throughout their school career is to make a poster to explain, amplify, or summarize visually something that they're studying. These are usually given as a home project – under the supervision of parents! At BHS, fourth grade students participate in a poster workshop in art class. The goal is to teach them how to tackle this type of project independently. Students need to experience how long it actually takes to make a good poster so they can plan ahead. The subject matter is the California mission, which they study in Social Studies. Students learn the poster-making process (thumbnail, dummy, final copy), as well as the three parts of a poster (image, title, and border). A poster has a job to do – communicate a simple idea in one quick glance.

This poster project is part of the 4th Grade's STEAM interdisciplinary curriculum this trimester in which students learn to use a t-square and ruler, and in order to draw a building, learn to break it down into its component shapes by looking at a photo. Missions are a perfect starting point, since they are basically composed of rectangles, squares, arches, and the occasional triangle. Students chose the art materials they wanted to use to complete their poster neatly and on time!
