BHS Student Wins State YAM for Third Time!

Sasha G. (4th grade) has amazed not only our BHS community, but the larger art education community. In the history of California's yearly Youth Art Month contest (YAM), we're pretty sure no student has won at state three years in a row! This amazing achievement began when Sasha was in 1st grade. To make it to state, a student's artwork has to win Round 1 at the county level to advance to Round 2. At the regional level, the student must win 1st place to then advance to Round 3 in Sacramento. The 1st place winners from around the state then compete against each other. Sasha won 1st in the K-2 category in painting 2 years in a row. This summer she won 1st place in the 3rd-5th grade category in mixed-media! Judges, parents, and her art teacher thought this was remarkable. She was awarded Berkeley Hall's newly created Mona Lisa Award to honor Sasha's dedication.
What a way to celebrate National ARTS in EDUCATION WEEK, September 11 - 17! This week is dedicated to the transformative power of art education in schools. With a new educational law in effect that is arts-frie
